On Monday. Tesla said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) that it will lay off 2,688 employees at its Texas factory.
The WARN Act of 1988, a US labor law, mandates that companies with 100 or more employees are bound to provide a 60-say notice ahead of planned closings or significant layoffs. Earlier this month, an Austin-based company garnered attention when reports emerged of layoffs impacting over 10% of its global workforce as noted by KXAN. As per the letter, Tesla is set to terminate a significant 2,688 employees from its Austin location.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk outlined the company’s rationale for the layoffs and emphasized the need for cost reductions. He also focused on the need for enhanced productivity as Tesla is all set for its next phase of growth.
Efforts by KXAN to secure additional commentary from Tesla have yielded no response thus far. Former Tesla employees, speaking in interviews with KXAN, shared sentiments of shock and dismay regarding the abrupt layoffs. One individual, opting for anonymity, described the experience as “crazy” and “heartbreaking,” expressing disbelief at the sudden turn of events.
Reflecting on the morning of April 15, the employee recounted waking up to an email notification titled “Tesla Employment Update,” which delivered the devastating news of immediate termination.
