Schools in Some Parts of Asia Shut Due to Scorching Heatwave

Increasing temperatures have led to a string of health advisories throughout South and Southeast Asia. In response, countries like Bangladesh and the Philippines have implemented school closures, while Indonesia is grappling with a surge in dengue fever incidents.

On Monday, a court in Bangladesh issued an order for schools nationwide to close in response to the heatwave, just one day after the government had reopened them.

“The High Court bench of Justice Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat passed a Suo moto order closing all primary and secondary schools and madrasas until Thursday due to the heatwave,” Deputy Attorney General Sheikh Saifuzzaman told AFP. The temperature in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka hovered near 40 degrees Celsius on Monday.

The Philippines has ordered to close schools and warned of overloading on its power grid. The temperature is expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius in the next three days.

In Thailand, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in Bangkok as well as in the central and northern regions, prompting the meteorological agency to advise individuals to refrain from prolonged outdoor activities.

State media reported that residents in Vietnam’s economic center, Ho Chi Minh City, are seeking relief from the heat in air-conditioned shopping malls. The National Weather Agency has cautioned about the dangers of forest fires, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses.
