Christopher Nolan’s feature film won seven awards, including Best Director and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.
How history—both cinematic and universal—will treat ‘Oppenheimer,’ Christopher Nolan’s twelfth feature film, remains to be seen. For now, it’s considered the best movie by the academics who vote and decide each year on Hollywood’s and—increasingly—international cinema’s finest. European films ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘The Zone of Interest’ broke into the Best Picture category at the 2023 Oscars, testament to this expanding recognition.
While nearly everyone came out a winner at the 96th edition (especially ‘Barbie’ and Ryan Gosling), the grand victor of the March 10th gala was—and remains—’Oppenheimer,’ the blockbuster megaton about the physicist and father of the atomic bomb during World War II, Robert Oppenheimer: ‘I have become death, the destroyer of worlds,’ Oppie, to his friends.
The film, led by Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. (both winning Oscars for their roles), and Emily Blunt (as more than ‘the wife of’; less so for Florence Pugh’s character), continues in theaters since its debut last summer; it grossed $952 million worldwide, trailing behind ‘Barbie’ and ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie’.
‘Oppenheimer’ is also available for rent and purchase on various platforms (Apple TV+, Rakuten TV), and starting this Thursday, March 21, it joins the catalog of another video-on-demand service where watching or re-watching ‘Oppenheimer’ won’t cost extra.
When and on Which Platform ‘Oppenheimer’ Premieres
‘Oppenheimer’ is available starting today on SkyShowtime, and subscribers to the platform—which launched in Spain a year ago—won’t have to pay a cent to enjoy the three-hour, 181-minute, epic narrated in two timelines (the rise and fall of the protagonist), in black and white (the trials), and featuring a multitude of Anglo-Saxon actors who resemble each other (from Matt Damon to Jason Clarke, Josh Hartnett, and Casey Affleck).
The ‘advantage’ of watching ‘Oppenheimer’ at home, on the sofa, is that viewers can ration it or even rewind if they’ve missed something or fallen asleep (unlikely with Ludwig Göransson’s soundtrack).
Trailer and Synopsis of ‘Oppenheimer’
During World War II, General Leslie Groves Jr. hires physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to participate in a top-secret project known as the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their efforts culminate on July 16, 1945, when they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever altering the course of history.
