Philippines to Double Solar and Quadruple Shares of Wind in Power Output by 2030

The Philippines is all set to boost the share of solar power output from 2.4% in 2024 to 5.6% by 2030 and wind from 3.1% to 11.7% according to a government presentation.

Southeast Asia anticipates a greater reliance on solar and wind energy to compensate for a decrease in the proportion of other renewable sources like hydropower and geothermal energy. This shift aims to achieve a target where non-fossil fuel sources will comprise 35% of the total power generation by 2030.

According to Mylene Capongcol, assistant secretary at the Philippines Department of Energy, the share of hydroelectricity is projected to decrease from 10% to 9.1% by 2030. Additionally, geothermal energy is expected to contribute 7.7% to the overall output by 2030, compared to 8.9% in 2024. This information was shared during the presentation at the Renewable Energy Markets Asia conference.

Capongcol emphasized during the presentation that the Philippines intends to meet these targets by doubling solar capacity and tripling wind capacity within six years. The country’s strategy includes a significant investment in offshore wind farms, despite their considerable initial costs.

However, it is worth noting that in some regions like the US and Britain, escalating costs and inflation have led to the cancellation or temporary pause of offshore wind projects in the past year.
