Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right-led government achieved a victory on Tuesday as the Senate approved a law granting anti-abortion groups access to women contemplating terminating their pregnancies. This development reignites tensions surrounding the issue of abortion in Italy, 46 years after its legalization in the predominantly Catholic country.
In a Senate vote where the government holds a majority, the legislation tied to European Union COVID-19 recovery funds, which included an amendment sponsored by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, received final approval with a vote of 95-68.
The law, previously approved by the lower Chamber of Deputies, grants regions the authority to authorize groups with expertise in supporting motherhood to access public support centers where women contemplating abortions seek counseling.
From the perspective of the right, the amendment is seen as fulfilling the original purpose of the 1978 law legalizing abortion, known as Law 194, which includes provisions aimed at preventing abortions and promoting motherhood.
“The government should realize that they keep saying they do not want to boycott or touch Law 194, but the truth is that the right-wing opposes women’s reproductive autonomy, fears women’s choices regarding motherhood, sexuality, and abortion,” Cecilia D’Elia, a Democratic Party senator, said at a protest this week against the legislation.
