Severe Storms Hit the US Gulf Coast; 1 Dead

A severe storm system has wrought widespread flooding, tornadoes, and other forms of storm damage across the southern United States.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), significant areas spanning Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama have been impacted. The NWS warned of potential wind guts reaching up to 75 mph in certain regions.

Tragically, one fatality has been reported in Scott County, Mississippi, located approximately 200 miles (320 km) north of New Orleans. However, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has not provided additional details regarding the incident or the cause of death.

Data from the tracking site PowerOutage.us indicates that over 200,000 customers throughout the region are currently without power as of Wednesday evening.

Flash flooding has struck the New Orleans area, with over a month’s worth of rainfall recorded in just a few hours. Additionally, several suspected tornadoes have caused damage across the Gulf Coast region.

Police in Slidell, Louisiana, reported that atleast 10 individuals were injured and transported to hospitals for treatment following a potential tornado.
