In response to President Joe Biden’s recent statement regarding potential arms supply restrictions, Gilad Erdan, speaking to Israeli public broadcaster Kan radio, expressed disappointment. Erdan emphasized Israel’s gratitude towards President Biden since the onset of the conflict.
Despite international objections, Israel has taken strategic actions, including deploying tanks and conducting targeted raids in Rafah, a city on the border. This area is alleged to house Hamas’s remaining battalions alongside displaced Palestinian civilians.
President Biden’s stern warning during an interview with CNN emphasized his stance: “If they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used… to deal with the cities.” He highlighted the civilian casualties in Gaza resulting from such armaments, condemning them as unacceptable.
Erdan cautioned that President Biden’s remarks might embolden adversaries such as Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah, potentially fostering hope among them. He raised concerns about Israel’s ability to achieve its objectives if restricted from entering Rafah, a crucial area housing numerous terrorists, hostages, and Hamas leaders.
Regarding the nature of the arms in question, Erdan clarified that they were offensive, not defensive, in nature. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Reports from AFP journalists documented heavy shelling in Rafah on Thursday, with subsequent confirmation from the Israeli military of strikes on Hamas positions further north in central Gaza.
Earlier this week, Israeli forces took control of Rafah’s border crossing into Egypt, historically serving as a vital conduit for aid into besieged Gaza.
