On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Russia’s air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed 17 drones launched by Ukraine. This action followed a significant drone attack by Russia that caused substantial damage to a hotel in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv.
The ministry specifically stated that three of the drones launched from Ukraine were shot down over the Kaluga region, located to the south of Moscow.
Vladislav Shapsha, regional governor of Kaluga, said the drones fell near an oil depot near Lyudinovo and no casualties or damages were reported.
The ministry also reported that nine of the drones launched from Ukraine were destroyed over the Bryansk region, three over the Kursk region, and two over the Belgorod region.
Both sides have been escalating attacks on each other’s infrastructure, although Russia rarely divulges details about the extent of Ukraine’s strikes on its territory. Officials in Kyiv assert that targeting Russia’s military, energy, and transportation infrastructure undermines Moscow’s war effort.
Meanwhile, according to the governor of the broader Mykolaiv region, a Russian drone strike inflicted significant damage on a hotel in the city. Russia’s RIA news agency further reported that the hotel was housing English-speaking mercenaries engaged in combat in Ukraine.
