On Wednesday, President Joe Biden signed legislation that prohibits TikTok, owned by a Chinese company, unless it is sold to a US entity within a year.
“The path to my desk was difficult. It should have been easier and it should’ve gotten there sooner…But in the end, we did what America always does, we rose to the moment,” Biden acknowledged the challenges.
Biden has recently enacted the legislative bill into law following approval from both chambers of Congress, the House and the Senate. The Senate endorsed the measure with a bipartisan vote of 79-18 on Monday after the House gave its approval on Saturday.
Additionally, the law mandates ByteDance to divest TikTok within nine months, with the possibility of a one-year extension if involved by Biden. Failure to comply would result in a nationwide ban on TikTok in the United States.
TikTok has responded in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), “This unconstitutional law is a TikTok ban, and we will challenge it in court…This ban would devastate seven million businesses and silence 170 million Americans.
