On Sunday, Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO made an unannounced visit to Beijing where is expecting to meet senior officials regarding the development of full self-driving software and the authorization to transfer data overseas, as per a source familiar with the situation.
According to Chinese state media, Musk engaged in talks with the country’s premier, Li Qiang. During their conversation, Li conveyed to Musk that Tesla’s progress in China could be viewed as a noteworthy instance of successful economic and trade collaboration between the United States and China.
Despite customer requests, the US electric vehicle manufacturer has not yet introduced full self-driving (FSD), the most autonomous version of its Autopilot software in China, its second-largest market, despite consumers urging to do so.
Musk said in response to a query on X this month that Tesla may make FSD available to customers in China “very soon”.
Competing Chinese automakers like Xpeng have been striving to gain a competitive edge over Tesla by introducing similar software.
According to the source, Musk aims to secure approval for the transfer of data collected from China to overseas locations for training algorithms for Tesla’s autonomous driving technologies.
Since 2021, Tesla has stored all data gathered by its Chinese fleet in Shanghai and has not transmitted any data back to the US, as mandated by Chinese regulators.
Musk’s visit coincides with the Beijing auto show, which commenced last week and concludes on May 4th. Notably, Tesla is not participating with a booth at China’s premier auto exhibition, marking its absence since its last attendance in 2021.
