British police have announced the arrest of three men in connection with the tragic deaths of 5 individuals, including a child, who died attempting to cross the English Channel from France.
The fatalities occurred when a small, overcrowded boat, carrying 112 individuals, embarked on a journey to cross one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. Panic ensued among the passengers not far from the shore, leading to the devastating loss of lives.
Rescuers managed to retrieve approximately 50 individuals from the distressed boat, with four requiring hospitalizations. However, some passengers opted to remain aboard, determined to reach Britain.
On Tuesday night, authorities detained three men suspected of “facilitating illegal immigration and entering the UK illegally.” The detained individuals include two Sudanese nationals, aged 22 and 19 as well as a 22-year-old South Sudan national, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).
“This tragic incident once again demonstrates the threat to life posed by these crossings and brings into focus why it is so important to target the criminal gangs involved in organizing them,” said NCA Deputy Director of Investigations Craig Turner.
“We will do all we can with partners in the UK and France to secure evidence, identify those responsible for this event, and bring them to justice.”
