Ten individuals have lost their lives following a tragic mid-air collision between two navy helicopters during a military rehearsal for a Royal Malaysian Navy parade. Video footage published by local media reveals that one of the helicopters clipped the rotor of the other, resulting in both aircraft crashing to the ground.
The incident occurred at 9:30 local time in Lumut, Malaysia, where the navy base is situated. Unfortunately, there are no known survivors from the crash.
“All victims were confirmed dead on site and the remains were sent to the [Lumut] Military Hospital for identification,” said the Royal Malaysian Navy.
The authorities have announced their intention to establish a committee to probe the cause of the tragic incident. One of the helicopters involved, identified as a HOM M503-3 carrying seven individuals, is reported to have crashed onto a running track.
The second helicopter, a Fennec M502-6 with three occupants, crashed into a nearby swimming pool. The state’s fire and rescue department stated that they were alerted to the incident at 09:50 local time (01:50 GMT).Top of Form
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “the nation mourns the heart-wrenching and soul-wrenching tragedy”.
“Condolences to all the families of the victims and prayers for strength to face this calamity,” he said.
