New York Budget Deal to Add Liquor Sales in Movie Theaters along with To-Go Cocktails

New York is set to broaden alcohol availability by permitting movie theaters to sell liquor and maintaining the option for individuals to purchase takeout cocktails from bars and restaurants as revealed by a set of measures announced on Thursday.

The state Assembly approved the measures, which constitute a component of the comprehensive state budget agreement. The state Senate is expected to follow suit before the package is forwarded to New York Gov. Kathy Houchl for her signature. The agreement was reached through negotiations behind closed doors between Hochul and the leaders of the state Senate and Assembly.

According to the New York State Liquor Authority, every movie theatre in New York is allowed to sell only wine and beer. But this new law would add liquor to the mix.

“Someone should be able to enjoy a cocktail while they watch a movie,” said state Sen. James Skoufis, a Democrat who chairs a legislative committee where state alcohol laws pass through.

The measure includes precautions aimed at preserving a family-friendly atmosphere in theatres with licenses to sell alcohol. Customers would be limited to purchasing one alcoholic beverage per transaction, and theaters must cease alcohol sales once the credits roll for the final showing of the day.
