Hundreds of teachers expressed discontent by participating in the walkout, coinciding with the reinstallation of encampment protest tents on campus. These tents had been removed following the arrest of hundreds of students during the protest.
In an unprecedented display of solidarity, Columbia faculty organized a massive demonstration to protest the university’s decision to involve the police in the student situation. Amid the current circumstances, in-person classes remain suspended, with the institution opting for remote classes instead.
Tensions are running high due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, with dozens of Yale students also facing arrest during protests. Consequently, Harvard and Yale closed their campuses to the public on Monday. Institutions are grappling with the challenge of balancing the promotion of free expression with ensuring safety for all members of the campus community.
