Chinese ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, who was in the position since 2019 has departed from his post and returned to China. The news surfaced during a visit by a senior Canadian diplomat to the Asian nation.
Additional information regarding the reasons for his departure from his post was not readily accessible. The Chinese embassy in Ottawa did not respond promptly to a request for comment.
Earlier, China’s foreign ministry stated that Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu engaged in discussions with Canadian Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison during his visit, focusing on “China-Canada relations and other matters of mutual interest and concern.”
The departure of the Chinese ambassador was initially disclosed by the Globe and Mail. According to sources cited by the newspaper, Cong’s position ended on April 9, catching some members of the diplomatic community off guard due to its suddenness.
Tensions between Ottawa and Beijing have persisted since 2018 when Canadian authorities arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of the Chinese telecommunications equipment company, Huwaei Technolgies on a US warrant. Subsequently, China detained Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.
