For the past three days, continuous and intense rainfall has pounded the plains of the Kashmir Valley, leading to landslides and flooding in many low-lying villages in Kupwara and Handwara. At the same time, higher-altitude areas like Gulmarg and the Mughal Road have experienced new snowfall, reintroducing wintry conditions to the region. Schools across the valley too were ordered to remain closed on Tuesday.
The regional Meteorological Department had forecasted ongoing wet weather across Jammu and Kashmir until Tuesday evening. However, there is a likelihood of weather improvement starting Tuesday evening, with conditions expected to be generally dry and devoid of significant activity from May 1 to May 5.
Due to the heavy rainfall, the Jhelum River exceeded the flood declaration level in Srinagar on Tuesday morning. Additionally, all major rivers and streams, including Pohru Nallah in Kupwara district, were nearing the danger mark due to the substantial rise in water levels.
The local administration has initiated control rooms to oversee the water levels in the Jhelum River and other water bodies across Kashmir.
Certain sections of Handwara and Kupwara towns have experienced waterlogging. Consequently, district administration officials have mobilized local police, Army personnel, CRPF forces, and the SDRF to conduct rescue operations.
Furthermore, a flash flood in Anantnag’s Qazigund area has resulted in partial damage to the Nawa Bonigam Bridge.
