Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez announced that he would pause his public duties as a judicial investigation was launched against his wife for corruption allegations.
On Wednesday, he stated that the allegations against his wife, Begona Gomez, were false. However, he announced the cancelation of his public agenda until Monday. On that day, he plans to address the media and reveal his decision regarding his political future.
“I need to pause and think,” Sanchez wrote in a letter shared on his X account. “I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worthwhile… whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honor.”
Gomez, aged 49 does not hold a public office and keeps a low political profile. She has been accused by Manos Limpias, a group that presents itself as a union but primarily functions as a platform pursuing legal cases, of allegedly leveraging her position to influence business transactions.
Manos Limpias, which translates to “Clean Hands,” is led by Miguel Bernad Remon, a prominent figure within the far-right spectrum.
The campaign group exploited a loophole in Spanish law that permits individuals or entities to participate in specific criminal cases even if they haven’t directly suffered harm from the accused.
