D Gukesh, a 17-year-old Indian teenager was awarded a gold medal and trophy for winning the Candidate Tournament 2024 at the closing ceremony in Toronto. He is astonished and still coming to terms with becoming the youngest-ever player to challenge for the world chess championship.

When questioned about whether he had considered the prospect of winning the Candidates tournament, organized by FIDE, the International Chess Federation, he responded to the news agency saying, “Not completely, but I look at it like this, if I manage to stay in good spirits throughout the tournament, it could be possible.”

He said that he found the last three rounds to be the most challenging, as he began to perceive the possibility of leading the tournament. Consequently, in the final days, he admitted to expressing a considerable amount of nervousness.

Gukesh, however, wasn’t the only Indian medalist at the Candidates. Koneru Humpy secured a shared silver in the Women’s section alongside China’s Lei Tingjie. Tan Zhongyi, from China, emerged triumphant in that section. Additionally, organizers commended Vaishali Rameshbabu for her impressive finish to the tournament, where she won five consecutive games, a remarkable achievement unprecedented at this level.
