13 Killed as Torrential Rains Lash Many Parts of Oman

On Monday heavy rains continued to lash many parts of Oman, resulting in 13 fatalities. The civil defense and ambulance authority in Oman retrieved the remains of a person who had been missing in the North Al Sharqiyah governorate, as reported by the UAE-based Khaleej Times. Atleast 12 people including 9 students, 2 residents, and 1 expatriate have lost their lives owing to flash flood.

“As part of the efforts of the search teams of the civil defense and ambulance department in North Al Sharqiyah governorate, and with the support of other parties and citizens, a missing person was found dead. Search efforts are still ongoing for three other people, including a child,” the CDAA was quoted by the website as saying.

As a result of heavy rainfall, numerous areas in Oman encountered significant flooding. The Royal Oman Police, the Royal Army of Oman, the civil defense authority, and the ambulance teams collaborated to relocate students from schools to secure locations.

Footage circulating on social media depicted vehicles being carried away by floodwaters inundating Oman’s streets, with residents trapped inside their residences.

According to Khaleej Times, the Oman Police Aviation Unit conducted an operation to evacuate 21 individuals from a rural farm to the AI Lasmo area within the Quriyat governorate.

Oman’s Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation issued a directive on Sunday, instructing schools and colleges to transition through distance learning. Business owners were also informed to prioritize the safety of their staff by staying updated on weather forecasts by monitoring weather bulletins.
